Nairobi!

Nairobi’s doors are being kicked down, and the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Program (UN Habitat) are supposed to be the hinges that keep that door fastened; well doesn’t look like either program has a very heavy set of bolts. These programs are insisting on developing and making plans to clean up the polluted Nairobi River Basin, but even though that is correct, I guess no one thought about the 127,000 people that have settled there, and that may be forced out of their homes. If the government is planning on refurbishing this vicinity then at least they could do is give the people notice, and give them some shelter to rely on, after they have been moved, I mean come on that’s at least they could do. If the Nairobi government stands by what they are doing by evicting all these citizens, then many of these people, will be destroyed, not only their homes, but all they have done by living there. Many of these people there have businesses to run and children that are being educated, in small rural schools, if the government takes that away then nobody has anything, and the citizens of Nairobi are helpless and homeless. “In July 2009, the Kenyan government evicted more than 3,000 people living Githogoro Village and destroyed their homes these people were left without shelter or assistance; many were forced to sleep out in the open by the ruins.” “The government should adopt eviction guidelines that respect human rights laws, hold genuine consultations with affected communities, identify alternatives to evictions and develop a comprehensive relocation and compensation plan.”
